To make the system more accessible for young professionals, the minimum work experience requirement has been reduced from two years to one year. This is a major advantage for recent graduates and early-career skilled workers. At the same time, the maximum age limit for post-study work visas has been lowered from 50 to 35, signaling a clear preference for younger talent who can contribute to the workforce over the long term.

Strong Focus on High-Demand Skills

Australia’s 2026 in-demand skills list places healthcare, IT, construction, and essential services at the top. The new visa framework is designed around these priorities to better match migration intake with job market needs. In addition, minimum salary thresholds will be reviewed annually to ensure foreign workers are paid in line with local market wages.

The Work and Holiday visa will continue in 2026, but a new selection method will apply in countries with very high application numbers. For countries like India, if applications exceed the quota, a ballot or lottery system will be used to ensure a fair and transparent selection process.
